You should minimally be willing to show an employer of your desire to continually improve. Ultimately the CAD operator has to 'know' what's going on.it's more than just 'lines and circles' - as often the information they put on paper has to be interpreted by those who may comprehend less than the drafter did. But taking just 2d may not fully convey your comprehension spatially. Taking revit will hopefully impart the spatial awareness that can be utilized in both 2d and 3d environments. If you only learn one software you may be restricting yourself. Because some employers use SolidWorks, or Microstation, or Rhinoceros, or Solid Edge, and as no one can answer 'where your future may lead' no one can advise you. And while the industry is moving more toward BIM offerings, there's no telling what you'll need to know. If it's architectural or civil, or a 'trade' they each have their own 'needs'. If it's fulfillment and contracting/construction then 2d you had better have down pat and be fast/productive. No one can answer whether you should 'do both' because no one knows what industry you're planning. And AutoCAD takes years to learn to be really productive, efficient, and versed. It takes months to learn.because it's very fiddly. But here unfortunately.learning the 'basic' commands with revit will NOT 'just cut it'. Not only does autocad require spatial recognition but that comprehension is more put to the test in an actual 3d modelling environment. The rest is usually compliances and company standards.

I can 'teach' you all you need to know about what you'll do 90% of the time in CAD in an afternoon. You should self study as well.because some aspects of each of these programs has surface level knowledge and then more applicable knowledge.įor CAD you're using 10 commands a day.line, copy, offset, circle, etc. You certainly cannot 'demand' (or expect) anything but low wages if all you have to offer is 'a desire to be paid' - every applicant has that (it's known/assumed). It's not about 'what you learned'.which often is a mere brush of the information you'll eventually grow and develop yourself.Īlso having education means you can capitalize on those efforts in the form of higher wages.

But taking courses and education more proves drive, motivation, and willingness to persevere through hardships. Trust me from someone that knows cad.we know who's bullshitting and who is not.Įvery cad manager knows that people come out of school slightly less stupid - no insult to anyone. And that's done with schooling and degrees.and/or be willing to be 'tested' on your knowledge levels of both the industry you're applying and the proficiency of the software in question. The problem is that employers will expect you to prove your capabilities.

The honest truth is they'll 'teach you little' other than how to work with the program.
